posted 5 Dec 2011 01:15 by Rob Parker

Mike Hampton received his Poole Sports Council Certificate of Commendation from the Mayor of Poole at a ceremony on 28th September 2011.

Mike joined Poole Hockey Club from school at the age of 16 and has remained a member for over 35 years. During this time Mike has held a number of roles including Mixed Team Captain, Secretary (during the Club Centenary year), Publicity Officer, Match report secretary and Social secretary.

Having been the 2nd team Manager for many years Mike led the team which won back to back championships and was part of the squad that got to the final of the ‘Cup’. He has only just stood down as 2nd XI Manager at the end of the 2010/11 season.

Mike is a Vice President of the club and supports all playing, administrative and social aspects of our activities.

Mike has made many lifelong friends from hockey and still enjoys playing each week. He has toured with Poole Hockey Club to the Isle of Man, Isle of Wight and Stratford Festivals

Mike has a nickname that came from a mixed game a long time ago, he hit the ball up the wing and as it sailed past the captain he turned and said 'You Wally' and so he became ‘Wally’ to all in the hockey world.

ASHDOWN LEISURE CENTRE ASTROTURF – HOCKEY LAUNCH

posted 24 Aug 2011 11:27 by Rob Parker   [ updated 31 Oct 2011 10:31 ]

Saturday 3rd September 2011

Leicester and England Ladies goalkeeper Maddie Hinch, who has just returned with the Bronze Medal winning England squad from the European Championships in Germany, formally launched the hockey season on the newly refurbished Ashdown Leisure Centre Astroturf hockey pitch on Saturday 3rd September.

Poole Hockey Club organised a number of matches and coaching sessions during the day to celebrate the opening of the new facility.

The pitch has been resurfaced over the summer, with funding from Poole Borough Council and England Hockey, as part of a £350k investment to upgrade the hockey, athletics and netball facilities at Ashdown Leisure Centre.

Andy Collyer, Chairman of Poole Hockey Club, said ‘This is a fantastic new facility and we are extremely grateful for the support from Poole Borough Council and England Hockey without which today would not have been possible. This is the only full sized Astroturf in Poole and provides a fantastic opportunity for players of all ages and abilities from the local community to play hockey on a superb new playing surface.’

We are pleased to announce that the artificial pitch surface used by the club has now been replaced. This was part of a larger project which includes the improvement of the athletics track and the multi use games area at Ashdown leisure centre.

The new facilities were officially opened on 24th July during Poole's Festival of Sport which was also held on the same day.
